Las Colinas Women's Association Collection Finding aid web posting, Oral History and Photo Digitization
Wednesday, July 18
Today, there were a couple more details relating to the Las Colinas Women's Association Collection. Kevin had looked over the finding aid that I had created (two set of eyes are better than one) to make sure everything sounded good. There were a couple of tweaks that I had to make to the finding aid before printing it out. Many archives have physical and online copies of finding aids. The Irving Archives have both. Once I did a final look over the finding aid and it was printed twice. One copy was placed in the Holding Folder that I created the day before and the the other begin a new Finding Aid binder starting with the Las Colinas Women's Association Collection 96. The Finding Aids binders and the accession logs are kept in Kevin's office on one of the bookshelves. After creating the Finding Aid binder and placing the other copy in the Holding Folder, I started on getting the finding aid ready to put online.
Kevin and I sat down together to get the Las Colinas Women's Association Collection finding aid ready to be uploaded online. Kevin showed me the website and he had to log into the website program to edit it. He showed me the materials that are housed by the Irving Archives and told me that once materials are processed into collections the website has to be updated to show the collection. I was guided to the area that I was going to edit but the software was not working correctly. We continued to try to get the area that needed to be edited but no avail. After that, I started working on some of the Oral History interviews, finishing up Eleanor Corry Bell's interview and started working on Bob Nelson's interviews.
Kevin asked me if I wanted to work on some Photo Digitization projects that needed to be done. I was ready to take a brake from Oral Histories so I said yes. Kevin brought out a manuscript box that contained three folders full of slides. Kevin told me that these slides were in a scrapbook that came apart therefore the pages were put into folders. The accession number for these materials is 9900-140 and the folders were in Box 2; however I did not ask if they were in a collection or not. I started the program for the scanner that was to be used to digitize the slides. Kevin went into the storage room and brought out a slide and film kit for the scanner. I couldn't remember if slides digitization was discussed in any of the classes I took but I don't think it was ever brought up in a discussion. I asked Kevin about the deterioration pace of slides. He replied that slides deteriorate faster than photos and for them to be digitized they have to be put into a special holder that raises the slides a little bit off the scanner to get a clear scan. Also, the reflective document mat had to be removed so it uncovers the transparency unit window beneath the mat. Kevin showed me the notch that the slide tray fits into on the scanner so that the slides can be scanned without any damage. We scanned three pages at once and renamed the scans with the accession number, box number, folder number and page number. I worked on digitalizaling slides for the remainder of the day.
